A website dedicated to Nelson news passed its millionth milestone last week.
nelsonlive.co.nz – owned by the same locally-owned media company as Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly – was launched 15 months ago to give Nelsonians up-to-date news and information throughout the week.
Since its launch, nelsonlive.co.nz has continued to build momentum and last Friday passed one million hits.
The website now attracts an average of 5500 hits a day.
nelsonlive.co.nz has a team of six journalists writing news, taking photos and filming video for the site, but also encourages members of the public to phone in with news tips, photos and information.
The driving force behind the site, reporter Brittany Spencer, says passing a million hits was a big buzz for her.
“It was really exciting. We get a lot of hits now and I’ve certainly noticed an increase in traffic a lot over the past six months.”
Editor Andrew Board says the site is evolving all the time.
“It was interesting for us as newspaper publishers to fully embrace this style of story-telling and we’re always learning. What our stats are showing us is that readers enjoy knowing what’s happening in the region when it happens, while reading more in-depth stories in the newspaper. It’s an interesting dynamic and clearly one that is working. Our newspapers are stronger than ever and the website is proving to be a good foil throughout the week.”
He says the average hits over the past few months are triple what they were a year ago, showing how the site is gaining in popularity.
The website is also supported by a Facebook page, Twitter account and an app, which means local readers can stay up-to-date at any time of the day or night.
